Fresno Rally Opposing Federal Budget Plan, Health Insurance Cuts

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A rally was held in Downtown Fresno, Thursday afternoon, in opposition to federal action on health insurance.

Constituents say that the federal budget plan just approved slashes Medicaid and Medicare.

They say they want to spread awareness of just how destructive the plan will be for Valley residents.

“The actions that are taken in Washington D.C. have a ripple effect, it’s not just Medi-Cal patients, it’s business owners, it’s medical providers, health centers everything. We live in a community where were interconnected and the decisions that are made have major consequences at the local level.” – Community organizer Melissa Hurtado.

Hurtado and others gathered at the Federal Building on Tulare Street to say that the budget plan is merely tax cuts for the rich, and they hope their Valley congressmen are listening.

Earlier in the day, the United States House of Representatives passed the Building a Better America Budget Resolution for fiscal year 2018.

U.S. Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) stated, “The Building a Better America budget is a step in the right direction. This budget strengthens our national defense, unlocks pro-growth tax reform while balancing our federal budget over the next ten years.”

He continued, “Washington’s spending problem is out of control, surpassing $20 trillion in national debt. This budget works to put our nation back on track, reducing spending while allowing Congress to make responsible decisions on how to fund federal agencies and programs.”

Halloween Safety Tips For Your Pets

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – It’s time for safe trick or treating…but what about your pets?

Front doors open and close frequently on Halloween, so Beth Caffrey from the Central California Animal Disaster Team says make sure all of your pets are wearing tags with current ID.

“The best thing you can do is keep them safely indoors , its not as quite as desperate as the 4th of july but a lot of time costumes and all the things that are going on can scare pets” – Beth McCaffrey, PIO CCADT.

Watch what your pets chews on, such as wires and cords, Caffrey says they can also get sick from candy.

“All of the candy buckets, whether they’re just out for your guests or if you’re trick or treating with them don’t ever put them down and leave them unattended if you have pets, and especially things like peanuts that are embedded in chocolate.” – Beth Caffrey, PIO CCADT.

Caffrey says decorations like fake cobwebs and plastic spiders can be a choking hazard.

Candles in pumpkins can also cause a fire – if pets knock them over.

MORE HALLOWEEN TIPS FOR HAPPY PETS!

It’s almost the scariest night of the year for you and your pet! The CCADT recommends taking preventative steps and precautions this Halloween to keep your pet safe all the way through the celebrations.

  • Keep your pets safely indoors, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities.
  • Make sure that all of your pets are wearing tags with current ID. Opening the door repeatedly for trick-or-treaters creates plenty of escape opportunities.
  • Keep candy out of your pets’ reach. Chocolate and other ingredients can be toxic to them.
  • Most pets arehappiest wearing nothing, but their birthday suit. Costumes and masks can make your pets uncomfortable or even cause injury.
  • Decorations can be dangerous.  Be sure to keep them safely away from pets. Candle flames can set fire to a pet’s fur. Hanging or dangling decorations can be an entanglement or choking hazard to some animals.
  • Use fake cobwebs sparingly, if at all.Pets can choke on fake cobwebs set up indoors. Outdoors, fake webs may be a hazard to birds and wildlife.
  • When going out trick-or-treating, leave your dog at home. Dogs can be easily excited by the Halloween commotion and a dog bite or lost dog will quickly end the evening’s fun.
  • Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic, but they can produce stomach upset in pets that nibble on them.
  • A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.
  • Wires and cords from electric lights and other decorations should be kept out of reach of your pets. If chewed, your pet might suffer cuts, burns, or receive a possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

Both Sides Rest In Starbucks Bandit Trial

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Both sides have rested in the Starbucks Bandit trial.

Jurors will hear closing arguments on Monday, November13th and decide the fate of the accused – Ryan Flores, who faces prison time on the charge of assault w/a deadly weapon with great bodily injury.

The robbery took place back on July 20th at the Starbucks on Herndon by the 99 Freeway.

Fresno police say 30 year-old Flores was wearing a transformers mask, carrying what turned out ot be a fake gun but a real buck knife and demanded money.

A regular customer –58 year-old Cregg Jerri saw it going down, and smashed a chair over Flores’ back and stabbed him.

Flores has already admitted to the attempted armed robbery charge, but is saying it was self defense to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

During the Prosecution’s testimony, video was shown as defendant Flores and so-called Good Samaritan Cregg Jerri fought on the floor after Flores tried to rob the store.

Audio was also played of the Fresno Police detective’s interview with Flores, a day later. Flores is heard slurring his words and his speech is impaired. He tells the detective that he is still taking methadone for treatment of heroin.

Flores told the jury he was “Not completely competent at that time.” He says he had a concussion and didn’t remember stabbing Jerri, just remembers arms flailing around.

On the audio tape, he tells the detective that just before the incident that he had gotten in a fight with his girlfriend over money and needed to feed his child.

The detective saying – so you went in with the intention to rob the place..but not to hurt someone. Flores saying “God, no.”

Afterwards, KMJ spoke with Defense attorney Richard Esquival, who says Flores is not a monster.

“I hope the jury will see the truth and that is that Ryan was trying to get away, Mr. Jerri prevented him, and Mr. Jerri used quite a bit more force than was necessary in subduing Ryan, Ryan tried to get away and in that process Mr. Jerri was injured.” -Defense attorney Richard Esquival.

Flores says he was defending himself in the scuffle that left both men injured, that he grabbed a hold of a wrist and that’s when Jerri got hurt.

It’s unclear from the videotape whether Flores had surrendered at this point.

The judge said jury will have to decide what has to take place in a fight before the aggressor can turn around and claim self defense.

Flores faces up to 8 years behind bars for the charges of assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury, and attempted robbery with a knife.

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Fresno Police are searching for 2 suspects involved with home invasion this morning.

A neighbor walked in on the scene and scared off the two suspects.

The woman probably saved the couple from further harm,

“The two suspects that entered into the apartment – one was a Black male adult, he had a black bandanna over his face – he was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans, the other was a Hispanic male adult. They held the couple at gunpoint where they then stole cash from the apartment.” Lt Mark Hudson.

Police say the suspects took off in a white four-door sedan.

The two men are considered to be armed and dangerous

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP.

Jury Deliberating Fate of Starbucks Bandit

0

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A jury is deciding the fate of the man dubbed the Starbucks Bandit at Superior Court in downtown Fresno.

30 year old Ryan Flores admits to the attempted robbery charge stemming from the incident at the Fresno Starbucks store in July, when so-called Good Samaritan Cregg Jerri intervened – hitting the would-be robber with a chair, and the two wrestling with Flores’ knife, leaving both men with injuries.

For the knife wounds inflicted upon Jerri, Flores is facing the charge of aggravated assault with great bodily injury in addition to attempted armed robbery.

In closing arguments, Defense Attorney Richard Esquivel showed video of the incident and photos of Flores’ wounds saying his client acted in self-defense, and that Jerri continued stabbing Flores even after he surrendered.

The other side, Deputy DA David Olmos, closed by saying that Flores is a liar, with conflicting stories from the time he was caught to his courtroom testimony.

Deputy DA Olmos told the jury that the physical evidence contradicts Flores’ words, and that he could have run out after Jerri initially hit him with a chair but chose to make the altercation deadly by swinging a knife.

The jury will decide what happens next.

Flores faces the possibility of almost a decade behind bars if found guilty of both charges.

FRESNO,CA (KMJ) – A Fresno jury finds the man dubbed the “Starbucks Bandit” guilty of the crimes.

30 year old Ryan Michael Flores was found guilty on November 14th of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Attempted Robbery with the personal use of a deadly or dangerous weapon, a knife.

On July 20th of 2017, Flores tried to rob a barista at local Starbucks at Herndon and the 99 Freeway while using a knife and a fake firearm.

His attempt was foiled due to the courage of Cregg Jerri, a Fresno man who intervened using nothing more than his courage and a chair.

After a struggle where Jerri took the knife away from Flores, the robbery attempt was unsuccessful and Mr. Flores fled the scene.

During testimony, both sides argued about the extent of Jerri’s stab wounds, but the jury did not find Flores guilty of great bodily injury – which could have added 3 years to the sentence.

The Fresno County Superior Court jury deliberated for only a few hours before finding Flores guilty of the two charges.

Flores faces a sentence of up to five years in state prison when he is sentenced on December 13th.

New UCSF Study Finds Sugar Industry Suppressed Evidence 50 Years Ago Of Sucrose Risks

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A new study finds the sugar industry suppressed evidence 50 years ago of the health risks of sucrose.

The UC San Francisco study published in PLOS Biology shows the sugar trade group pulled plug on research in the late 60’s when it pointed to negative health effects of sugar in order to protect commercial interests.

The Sugar Research Foundation funded animal research, called Project 259 that evaluated the effects of sucrose on cardiovascular health.

Results showed an association with heart disease and bladder cancer, but the Sugar Foundation ended the research without publishing the results or revealing any evidence of harm.

The sugar industry also began working with nutrition scientists in the mid-1960s to single out fat and cholesterol as dietary causes of coronary heart disease, downplaying evidence that sucrose was also a risk factor, and that sugar calories had different metabolic effects than calories from starch. It was stark contrast to its public position that all calories are equal.
